Casting tooling design
Tooling for non-ferrous pressure die casting is the core of the work. Around it I take on what comes before and after: from the casting design itself to supervision during commissioning.
Scope
High pressure die casting moulds
Single and multi-cavity moulds for aluminium and other non-ferrous alloys.
- Parting line and draw direction — they decide whether flash lands on a visible face
- Gating system: gate location, fill rate, biscuit separation
- Venting and vacuum — thin walls will not fill if air has nowhere to go
- Cooling or thermal control keeping the part inside tolerance
- Slides, hydraulic cores and mechanisms for long strokes and undercuts
- Ejection layout giving even release without distortion
- Tool steel selection and heat treatment, which drive tool life
- Fit to your specific machine: clamping force, platen size, ejector stroke
Scope
Trim dies
Trimming of gates, flash and overflows on die cast parts.
- Part locating scheme, which governs repeatability
- Cutting edge layout along the flash contour
- Gates, overflows and webs removed in a single stroke
- Trimming force and press selection
- Scrap removal from the working area
- Replaceable cutting elements serviced without full teardown
Scope
Gravity dies (permanent moulds)
Machine and manual dies for non-ferrous alloys.
- Parting and opening scheme, manual or machine actuated
- Die wall thickness and preheating regime
- Feeder and riser placement for directional solidification
- Cores and inserts, replaceable where wear is fastest
- Working surface coating and its renewal in service
- Actuation and locking of the halves
Also
Additional work
Part design development
- A 3D model and drawing of the casting from your sketches or a sample. Often this is where it is decided whether the part can be cast at all.
Manufacturability review
- A written assessment of the part before tooling design starts, with proposed design changes.
Filling and solidification analysis
- Simulation of mould filling and solidification, with a report.
Design supervision
- Support during manufacture and commissioning of the tool.
